Hello, I'm a new member that has come into a very low s/n 213xx, 1962 vintage Sako Model L579 Forester in.243 Heavy Barrel (Varmint). Independent gunsmith stated very collectible and lightly used and said it did not even need to be cleaned up! Not in box, but 98% near excellent in all respects. Mounted on top is a nice, early Leupold Vari-x 3x9 scope. The rifle is an unmolested original that appears to have been very well taken care of with no scratches or other abuse. The factory rep that I called today absolutely concurs that it is indeed, rare with such an early s/n and would be worth approximately 1000 dollars without the scope. I am not quite up to uploading pictures and will learn that soon, but would be grateful to hear the input from any other members who are familiar with this rifle.
I live on the Mass/NH line. Thanks to all.Glenn. Hi, your Sako would normaly sell for $750 to $850 in the con. You described. With the scope you can add another $100.The Sako 243 Forester/Varment is one of those very under rateded rifles and should really command a much higher price. But that's not always what the buyng public is willing to pay. I don't know if the low serial number has any bering on the price. For those out there the word/name Sako is actully prononced with a short A.Got reamed out by the Sako Rep.

Once for pronounceing the name wrong. He told me that it wasn't a wrist watch. Hi, your Sako would normaly sell for $750 to $850 in the con. I get funny looks when people try to correct me for saying it correctly, I used to work with alot of Finns, pronounce it 'seiko' around them and you were likely to get 'forechecked into the boards'.
Seiko watches have a 6 or 7 character serial number on their casebacks. The second character can be a letter but the rest are all numbers. You can use the Seiko serial number in conjunction with the movement number to calculate the year of manufacture. Paulsonconstruction Sako-addicted It is the same as the previous L579 action except it has a shroud on the back of the bolt & the AII stamping denotes this modification. The AII stamping change started late 1977 or early 1978 with serial # 327116, so I would guesstimate your production date in the late 70's.

I always tell people it's pronounced sock-o.In regards to the OP; I agree with you again GRC; a realistic value of what you might get for it is in that ballpark. For insurance purposes, I would put 1000 on the rifle. As far as a 'low serial number' goes, I think it's a bunch of hype. Personally, a 21,000 serial number isn't that low. Something in the 2 or 3 digit range is low, but doesn't necessarily mean that a gun is any better than another one made further down the line. I can't see a 5 digit serial number commanding a premium; I think the company rep was blowin some smoke.
I appreciate all the input and rationale from the various members. You are all, indeed, knowledgeable and have helped a great deal in helping me make a good decision regarding my inherited rifle. Unfortunately, I am a dyed-in-the- wool left hand shooter so with it being a RH, I think I will offer it for sale, with the scope, for 850, to someone who will appreciate the fine condition that it was kept in by my uncle. They are made to be used and enjoyed and no sense letting it sit in the closet any longer. There is about 180 dollars of factory Winchester ammo that will be thrown in, as well. That should make for a good deal. Thanks too all.Glenn.The Firearms Forum is on online community for all gun enthusiasts.
